The ancient temple of Kalpeshwar is a popular site devoted to Loed Shiva. The temple draws significant amount of tourists throughout the year and is located at an elevation of 2,200 mts (7,217.8 ft) above the picturesque Urgam valley, Chamoli district in the region of Garhwal. The temple’s historic legend dates back till the time of Pandavas and Kalpeshwar is the fifth temple in the five (Panch Kedars) of Lord Shiva’s five divine anatomical forms. Compared to all Panch Kedar temples this is the only one that remains open year wide.
The matted hair form of Lord Shiva is worshipped in the Kalpeshwar temple and the entire trail that begins from this holy shrine ascends through lush green terrace fields and dense forests. People who’re visiting this site would also find a giant old Kalpvriksha tree which is also believed to grant wishes.
Travellers can reach the valley of Urgam after going through an 11 km trek that starts from Helang. From Urgam valley one can find two alternative routes, one ending at the Kalpeshwar temple and the other which goes through Rudranath and Panar via the beautiful town of Dumak. Other Panch Kedar temples and towns like Rudranath temple, Chopta and Joshimath are also accessible from the site of Kalpeshwar.
The climatic conditions at Kalpeshwar remain favorable for tourists’ year wide and travellers can visit at any time of the year. However it’s advised not to visit the town during rainy season to avoid landslides and road blocks. The town is accessible to all major places of the state and roads are well connected to Helang and Urgam Valley.

By Road: The temple of Kalpeshwar is accessible from Rishikesh and is at a distance of 253 kms on the Badrinath-Rishikesh Highway. Motorable roads reach till the town of Urgam and the 2 trek to Kalpeshwar commences through the town.
