Being among the most beautiful and isolated high altitude lakes of India, Sahastra tal is locked away amidst the beautiful Himalayas at an astonishing elevation of 5000 mts above the sea level (16400ft). The lake is situated at Khatling glacier’s western end and attracts significant number of trekkers and nature lovers. The entire trek route for Sahastra Tal is challenging and beautiful as well. Travellers need to walk amidst the serene valleys, narrow gorges and beautiful villages for getting to the heavenly site of Sahastra Tal in Uttarakhand. Being near the picturesque Bhilanga valley, trekkers are offered with enchanting panoramic views of the majestic Himalayan peaks and glaciers. Here you’ll be delight with the magnificent views of the glaciers of Meru, Kirti Stambh and the Jogin Group. According to the renowned Himalayan travelogue author Bill Aitken and Scot theologist this area is described as “Garhwal’s lake district”. Legend says that rituals were performed in this lake by a king while he offered Lord Vishnu with thousand (Sahastra) Brahma-Kamal flowers.

The wide spread valley is located between Bhagirathi and the Bhilangana valley in the east side. A higher ridge would continue towards the north and various small and medium high altitude lakes could be found on either sides of ridge. The Sahastra Tal is located at the ridge head.
How To Reach
By Air: The nearest airport to the beautiful town to Bhatwari is the Jolly Grant Airport at Dehradun. Bhatwari is located 174 kms away from the town of Dehradun. Taxis can also be booked from the airport for reaching there quickly.
By Rail: The railway stations of Dehradun or Rishikesh would make a perfect start for traveling towards the picturesque town of Bhatwari. These railheads connect the towns to all major cities of India.
By Road: All motorable roads connect Bhatwari to other major towns of Uttarakhand without taking much time. Outstation travellers need to board buses from Kashmiri Gate ISBT, Delhi to the town of Haridwar, Rishikesh and Dehradun. From here on taxis and buses are available to Uttarkashi and Bhatwari.
