The division of New Tehri lies within the district headquarters which is located at about 16kms from Old Tehri. The most vital tourist destination in this town is the Tehri Dam, which is also among the most significant hydroelectric projects of the world that harness waters to the Himalayan Rivers Bhilangana and Bhagirathi. The small and quiet town of New Tehri is the only planned town within the state of Uttarakhand which is also gradually gaining importance as a renowned spot for travellers due to its pleasant weather and varied culture.
The town receives adequate share of snowfall at the time of winters. With the help of government and tourism department initiatives the town has also got its fair share of sightseeing attractions for tourist excursions. The town of Tehri mainly derives its name from the word “Trihari”, which is a place where three forms of sins are cleansed namely sins that are born out of Vacha, Kamana and Mansa or word, deed, and thought respectively. Today the ruins of ancient Tehri lie beneath the water. New Tehri is also a modern town which is spread at about an elevation of 1550-1950mts above the sea level and also overlooks the gigantic Tehri dam and the lake.
